Conversion vans are a growing trend in vehicles today. The best definition of one of these vehicles is a van that has been converted to other uses. One of the most popular conversions is that of a regular passenger or cargo van which has been converted to use as a camper or "mini-RV."
When shopping for a conversion van, make a list of the amenities you would like to have. Do not be shy about putting anything on the list. You can include:
- Air conditioner/heater
- Bed
- Storage space
- Cook top
- Refrigerator
- Oven
- Entertainment center
(Also, if you decide to go the Class B motorhome route, you can also include things like a shower, toilet, sofa sleeper and more depending on the model of course.)
Of course, the van may not hold the same types of amenities that a home or full-sized RV might have. Many commercially made and "homemade" conversion vans have the same items. A homemade model might have the following amenities:
- A porta-potty instead of a regular toilet
- A camp stove and/or a toaster oven
- A battery bank with a power converter for hooking up to an RV park's electrical post and/or solar power
- A 12-volt refrigerator or ice chest
- A bed, either built by hand or a seat that folds down into one, that doubles as a sofa
- A CD player, DVD player, laptop or other type of entertainment center. Some passenger vans include a rear-seat DVD player.
- Showers or baths can be home made, taken in a gym using a membership, at truck or rest stops, at an RV park or using the "bucket" method.
- A small, room-sized air conditioner fitted into a window or the interior with vents cut into the side of the van to allow heated air to escape.
- A small space heater
Basically, when it comes to the types of features a conversion van can have, the sky is truly the limite.
